De Vries hoopt momentum uit eerste races mee te nemen naar Santiago

Komend weekend komen de Formule E-coureurs na een onderbreking van bijna twee maanden weer in actie. Nyck de Vries hoopt in Chili het momentum uit het eerste raceweekend in Saoedi-Arabië vast te houden.

De Vries debuteerde in Diriyah in de Formule E als fabriekscoureur van Mercedes en wist in de eerste twee races een aardige indruk te maken. De Nederlander werd in zijn eerste race knap zesde, om vervolgens in de tweede race geen punten te scoren. Daarna reed De Vries nog de (teleurstellende) seizoensfinale van de Formule 2, de klasse waarin hij afgelopen jaar kampioen werd.

Daarna hoefde De Vries anderhalve maand niet in actie te komen en eigenlijk had hij dat liever anders gezien. "We hebben na Diriyah een korte pauze gehad, maar ik had graag gezien dat die niet zo lang was. We waren goed voorbereid voor Saoedi-Arabië en hadden een goed weekend, en daarom was ik graag blijven racen om op dat succes verder te kunnen bouwen", vertelde De Vries in een voorbeschouwing op de race in Santiago.

Rustperiode ook fijn na 'zwaar jaar' 2019

"Tegelijkertijd was het ook fijn om na zo'n zwaar jaar even uit te kunnen rusten. Ik zou graag het momentum van het eerste raceweekend mee willen nemen naar de rest van het jaar, maar we zijn ons bewust van de uitdagingen die op ons pad staan en we weten hoe sterk de concurrentie is. Daarom bekijken we alles stap voor stap en blijven we met beide benen op de grond staan."

Mercedes kende in Diriyah een geweldig debuut in de Formule E. Het team pakte met Stoffel Vandoorne in beide races een derde positie en stond dus al twee keer op het podium. Samen met de zesde plek van De Vries in de eerste race zorgt dat er wel voor dat Mercedes op de eerste positie in het kampioenschap staat bij de teams.
