Giovinazzi moest erg wennen bij pre-season-test: "Ik was de weg kwijt"

Antonio Giovinazzi reed in Abu Dhabi voorlopig zijn laatste Formule 1-race. De Italiaan vervolgt zijn carrière in de Formule E en heeft bij een pre-season-test al kennis gemaakt met de nieuwe elektrische bolides, de zogeheten Gen2. In 2018 reed Giovinazzi al eens in een Formule E-bolide, een voorganger van de huidige wagens.

De voormalig F1-coureur moest ondanks zijn eerdere ervaring erg wennen aan de nieuwe elektrische auto's. "Ik verwachtte dat het niet gemakkelijk zou zijn, vooral omdat ik in 2018 met de Gen1-auto reed tijdens de rookietest", vertelde Giovinazzi aan The Race. "Deze Gen2-auto is zeker beter, maar ik had verwacht dat het iets gemakkelijker zou zijn. Het remmen was echt ingewikkeld."

Giovinazzi voelde duidelijke verschillen met het rijden in de Formule 1. "Ik herinner me dat ik na de eerste dag helemaal de weg kwijt was. Ik moest gewoon wat nieuwe input in mijn hoofd zetten, want het is een auto die ik qua balans en alles nog nooit eerder heb gereden", legde hij uit. "Hier moet je heel zacht remmen, je hebt niet veel grip, dus geen downforce en je kunt niet veel snelheid in de bochten dragen. Toen gingen we naar het racetempo en energiemanagement en het waren allemaal nieuwe dingen voor mezelf."

Giovinazzi heeft een contract bij het Formule E-team van Dragon Penske. Hij wordt daar de teamgenoot van Sergio Sette Camara.

Beste kerel maar een hoogvlieger was hij in F1 nou niet, en in die E autotjes verwacht ik ook niet veel van hem.
