De Vries teleurgesteld na tweeluik in New York: “Had meer moeten scoren”

Nyck de Vries kende een veelbewogen weekend in de straten van New York. De regerend Formule E-kampioen, die in de elektrische klasse uitkomt voor Mercedes, kwam niet verder dan een achtste en een zevende finishplaats. Vooral in het tweede bedrijf toonde De Vries zich niet van zijn zuiverste kant.

De 27-jarige Nederlander is naderhand eerlijk. “We hadden een goede auto vandaag, al was-ie niet geweldig gebalanceerd.” De coureur uit het Friese Sneek gaf zijn Mercedes EQ-renstal complimenten voor een ‘goed uitgevoerde race’, om daarna te benadrukken dat de racesnelheid goed was. De Vries’ teamgenoot Stoffel Vandoorne wist zijn bolide wél naar een topklassering te sturen. De Belg finishte kort achter winnaar Antonio Félix da Costa als tweede en vergrootte zijn voorsprong in het tussenklassement.

De Vries beleefde tijdens de tweede ePrix van het weekend een aantal momenten die op z’n zachtst gezegd spectaculair genoemd kunnen worden: na een spannend duel met wat ellebogenwerk schoot Mitch Evans even van de baan, kort daarna kreeg De Vries op zijn beurt een zetje van Alexander Sims. De wedstrijdleiding achtte het in beide gevallen niet noodzakelijk om door middel van straffen in te grijpen.

Titelprolongatie lijkt De Vries te kunnen vergeten: na twaalf van de zestien races heeft de Nederlander 83 punten gescoord. Leider Vandoorne is officieel nog te achterhalen, maar daarvoor heeft De Vries meer dan één wondertje nodig.

Het is altijd goed om kritisch tegen jezelf te zijn. Maar soms zit het er niet in en komt het er ook niet uit. Maar is ook fijn als Stoffel dit jaar de titel binnen kan halen.
Ben meer benieuwd wanneer de Vries weer een vrijdag morgen mag testen en wat ie volgend jaar gaat doen.
