Dillmann op pole in kwalificatie met wisselende omstandigheden, Visser in achterveld

Morgen valt de beslissing in het kampioenschap in de Formule V8. Nog zeven rijders maken kans op de titel. Op het Circuit de Catalunya nabij Barcelona werd vanmorgen in wisselende weersomstandigheden gekwalificeerd. AVF-coureur Tom Dillmann start de race op pole, zijn voornaamste rivaal Louis Deletraz start als vierde. Beitske Visser start de eerste race in het achterveld. De Nederlandse kwam tot een dertiende tijd.

Hoewel het bij aanvang van de kwalificatie niet meer regende was de baan nog wel dusdanig nat dat alle coureurs naar buiten gingen op de regenbanden. In de beginfase ging het meteen mis voor Alfonso Celis Jr, de Mexicaanse testrijder van Force India ging de banden in bij het uitkomen van de vijfde bocht. Het incident zorgde voor een rode vlag en betekende het einde van de sessie voor Celis Jr.

De baan droogde gedurende de kwalificatie steeds verder op en enkele coureurs kozen al snel voor de slicks. Dillmann reed de snelste tijd, maar Matthieu Vaxiviere was slechts 0.025 seconde langzamer terwijl Jack Aitken wederom indruk maakte met een derde tijd.

In tegenstelling tot Dillmann reed Deletraz de hele kwalificatie op regenbanden. De gok leek even goed uit te pakken, maar uiteindelijk bleken de coureurs op slicks toch in het voordeel. Deletraz zakte in de slotfase terug naar een vierde plaats.
