Isaakyan zegeviert in tweede race, Celis Jr. nieuwe leider kampioenschap

Matevos Isaakyan heeft de tweede Formule V8-race op het circuit van Spa-Francorchamps gewonnen. Isaakyan wist de race te winnen dankzij een slimme strategische keuze. Rene Binder werd tweede, Alfonso Celis Jr. wist na de winst in de eerste race nu de laatste podiumplaats te pakken. Celis Jr. neemt dankzij zijn sterke races in de Belgische Ardennen de leiding in het kampioenschap over van Pietro Fittipaldi.

Bij de start was polesitter Fittipaldi slecht weg, waardoor Rene Binder de leiding over kon nemen. Debutant Menchaca wist Fittipaldi ook te passeren, maar ging wijd bij La Source. Dit zorgde ervoor dat Fittipaldi de tweede plaats weer over kon nemen. Fittipaldi stelde vervolgens orde op zaken door teamgenoot Binder in Les Combes te passeren en de leiding weer over te nemen.

In de derde ronde begon Isaakyan voorzichtig aan zijn opmars naar voren. De Rus wist Roy Nissany te passeren en schoof op naar de vijfde plaats. In de vijfde ronde werden de eerste stops gemaakt, Celis Jr. was er vroeg bij door in de zesde ronde de banden te laten wisselen. Isaakyan kwam steeds verder naar voren en wist Menchaca te passeren op het rechte stuk richting Les Combes.

In ronde acht sloeg het noodlot toe bij Fittipaldi. De Braziliaan kwam binnen voor zijn stop, maar verloor bijna twintig seconden door een probleem. Rene Binder leidde ondertussen de race, voor Isaakyan en Menchaca. Door de stops van anderen lag Celis Jr. een ronde later weer op de derde plaats.

In ronde tien kwam ook Isaakyan binnen. De Rus stopte een ronde later dan leider Binder en kwam voor de Oostenrijker weer de baan op. Binder ging meteen in de aanval, maar Isaakyan wist dankzij goed verdedigingswerk de leiding te behouden.

Fittipaldi was door zijn slechts stop teruggevallen naar de zevende plaats, maar wist daar een zesde plaats van te maken door Egor Orudzhev te passeren op Kemmel Straight. Ook Nissany wist in de slotfase nog een plekje te winnen door de vierde plaats van de sterk rijdende Menchaca over te nemen.

Na twintig ronden racen kwam Matevos Isaakyan als eerste over de meet. Het is de tweede zege voor de Rus in de klasse, eerder won hij op het circuit van Jerez in 2016. Volgende week komen de heren alweer in actie: plaats van handeling is dan het circuit van Monza in Italië.
