MP Motorsport legt Peroni vast

Alex Peroni heeft getekend bij MP Motorsport voor een seizoen in de Eurocup Formule Renault 2.0. Peroni wordt in het Nederlandse team teamgenoot van tweevoudig Formule 4-kampioen Christian Lundgaard.

De 18-jarige coureur uit Australië staat aan het begin van zijn tweede seizoen in de formuleklasse, nadat hij in zijn debuutseizoen in de Formule Renault 2.0 Eurocup indruk maakte door in het eindklassement als tiende te eindigen. Daarmee werd hij de beste van vijf Australiërs in het kampioenschap.

Peroni's beste prestatie was zonder meer zijn overwinning vanaf pole position in de tweede race op het lastige stratencircuit van Pau. Daarmee werd hij de eerste Australiër die een Eurocup-race won sinds Daniel Ricciardo dat in 2008 voor het laatst deed. Andere hoogtepunten van Peroni's eerste seizoen waren een vijfde plaats in de eerste race op Pau en zesde plaatsen op Monaco (twee keer), Monza en Silverstone.

Bij MP krijgt Peroni de Deen Christian Lundgaard als teamgenoot. Lundgaard won vorig seizoen twee Formule 4-titels op weg naar zijn debuut in de Eurocup dit jaar.

"De concurrentie in de Eurocup is enorm intens", aldus Peroni, "dus ik ben blij dat ik bij zo'n professioneel team als MP Motorsport aan de slag kan. Ik hoop een goede werkrelatie op te bouwen met mijn nieuwe engineer, zodat we onder alle omstandigheden het maximale uit de auto kunnen halen en tegen het eind van het jaar in de top kunnen meestrijden. Een andere reden voor mij om voor MP te kiezen was de ervaring en het succes van het team in een reeks van kampioenschappen – van Formule 4 tot Formule Renault 2.0, GP3 en Formule 2."

Sander Dorsman, teammanager van MP Motorsport, heeft hoge verwachtingen van Peroni. "Alex draaide vorig jaar een prima seizoen in de Eurocup en had met een beetje meer ervaring en geluk in de top-vijf kunnen eindigen. Ik denk daarom dat we komend seizoen moeten streven naar een top-vijf-klassering. We heten hem van harte welkom in het team en kijken ernaar uit om met hem samen te werken."

Peroni verhuist eind februari naar een onderkomen in de buurt van MP's hoofdkwartier in Westmaas, waar hij zich kan voorbereiden op de eerste testdagen.
