Voorbeschouwing: GP2 Asia-seizoen 2011

Morgen starten de eerste vrije trainingen van een nieuw seizoen GP2 Asia Series. De raceweekenden worden voornamelijk gebruikt ter voorbereiding op het Main Series-seizoen. F1Today.nl blikt vooruit op het Asia-seizoen 2011.

Normaal gesproken gaat een Asia-seizoen over twee verschillende jaren, dit jaar wordt er alleen geracet in 2011. Dit is gedaan omdat dit seizoen de nieuwe GP2-auto, de GP2/11, zal worden geïntroduceerd. Verder lijkt het komende Asia-seizoen meer op een grote testsessie, want er zullen slechts zes races worden verreden verspreid over 3 weekenden. Bahrein zal zelfs tweemaal aangedaan worden. Het seizoen start echter in Abu Dhabi.

Debutanten
Pastor Maldonado, Sergio Perez en Jerome DAmbrosio zijn doorgestroomd naar de Formule 1, waardoor er dus weer nieuwe plaatsen vrij zijn gekomen. Verder zijn ook onder andere Christian Vietoris, Giacomo Ricci, Alvaro Parente en Luca Filippi verdwenen van de grid.

[LEFT_IMG=11296][/LEFT_IMG]Komend seizoen staan er maar liefst acht debutanten aan de start verdeeld over evenveel teams. Van deze nieuwe coureurs lijkt Esteban Gutierrez de beste papieren in handen te hebben. De Mexicaan werd in 2010 kampioen in de GP3 Series en racet komend seizoen voor topteam Lotus ART Grand Prix als teammaat van Jules Bianchi. Verder heeft ook Formule 2-vice-kampioen Jolyon Palmer promotie gemaakt. Hij racet bij Arden International.

Verder kunnen we uit de GP3 Series ook nog James Jakes en Pal Verhaug verwelkomen. World Series by Renault-kampioen Mikhail Aleshin stapt komend seizoen over naar GP2-team van Carlin Motorsport. In de World Series reed de Rus ook voor Carlin, maar in de GP2 zijn zij nieuw. Verder promoveren Julian Leal en Nathanael Berthon vanuit de World Series en komt Andrea Caldarelli over van de Italiaanse Formule 3.

Kanshebbers
Kampioensteam Rapax zal met een geheel nieuwe line-up aan de start verschijnen in Abu Dhabi. Pastor Maldonado is gepromoveerd naar het Formule 1-team van Williams, terwijl Luiz Razia overgestapt is naar het nieuwe AirAsia-team. Met Fabio Leimer en debutant Julian Leal wil Rapax weer opnieuw aanspraak maken op de titel, al zal dit met deze relatief onervaren coureurs zeker geen makkelijke opgave worden.

[RIGHT_IMG=11295][/RIGHT_IMG]Rapax zal waarschijnlijk veel weerstand krijgen van iSport International die met Sam Bird en Marcus Ericsson veel jong talent in huis heeft. Ook Lotus ART Grand Prix start het seizoen met sterke coureurs, Jules Bianchi en GP3-kampioen Esteban Gutierrez. Voor Giedo van der Garde zal komend seizoen het jaar van de waarheid worden. Nu zijn de Asia Series niet zo belangrijk als de Main Series, maar is wel een goede voorbereiding op het komende jaar. Zijn teamgenoot Charles Pic komt over van Arden International.

Verder mag AirAsia worden gezien als een outsider voor overwinningen en podiumplaatsen. De titel is misschien nog wat vele gevraagd, maar het debuterende team liet in de wintertests een sterke indruk achter en heeft met Luiz Razia en Davide Valsecchi twee ervaren en sterke coureurs in huis. Verder kan het team natuurlijk profiteren van de Formule 1-ervaring van moederteam Lotus.

Kalender
Het Asia-seizoen is dit jaar uitzonderlijk kort. Er worden slechts zes races gereden verdeeld over drie weekenden. Twee daarvan zijn in Bahrein, terwijl het seizoen begint op het verkorte circuit van Abu Dhabi. Er zal hier dus niet op de Formule 1 lay-out worden gereden.

11-13 maart 2011: Bahrein

  Het GP2 Asia seizoen is altijd heel kort. Gewoon een soort voorseizoen op het echte GP2 seizoen. :p

  In de eerste 2 seizoenen kon je het nog beschouwen als een volwaardige race serie. Nu is het niet meer dan een opwarmertje.
