Giedo van der Garde is zijn eerste GP2-race als tiende gefinisht. De iSport-coureur ging in China als vijfde van start, maar een verkeerd afgestelde versnellingsbak betekende dat hij op het lange rechte stuk machteloos was en zelfs gas moest terugnemen om de motor niet vol in het rood te jagen.

Van der Garde: "Ik kon helemaal niets beginnen op het rechte stuk. De versnellingsbak stond niet goed afgesteld, waardoor ik op het rechte stuk heel snel tegen de limiet aan zat en een seconde verloor op de rest. Ik moest zelfs van het gas en dan gaan ze je op het lange eind in Shanghai natuurlijk makkelijk voorbij. We hadden ook een beetje pech met de safety-car, want toen die de baan op kwam, hadden we net onze pitstop gedaan. Maar goed, het is niet anders. Ik was op de eerste helft van de baan veel sneller dan de mannen voor me, maar zonder een goede topsnelheid kom je hier nergens."

Giedo van der Garde heeft besloten de tweede race te laten schieten en naar Barcelona te vliegen. De Nederlander zal daar een ereronde rijden in een World Series-auto rijden. 's Avonds volgt dan de prijsuitreiking, waar Van der Garde zijn beker voor het kampioenschap zal ontvangen. De volgende race in het GP2 Asia-kampioenschap is in Dubai, op 6 december.
