Palmer wint sprintrace in Bahrein, Vandoorne heeft pech

Jolyon Palmer heeft de GP2-sprintrace in Bahrein gewonnen. De winnaar van gisteren, Stoffel Vandoorne, beleefde een mindere dag. De Belg kwam vroeg in de wedstrijd in aanraking met Daniël de Jong en Artem Markelov, waarna Vandoorne ver buiten de punten zou finishen.

Polesitter Felipe Nasr beleefde een slechte start, waarna Simon Trummer de leiding greep in de openingsfase van de wedstrijd. Na een aantal ronden werd de Zwitser verschalkt door Palmer, die vervolgens niet meer ingehaald zou worden.

Stoffel Vandoorne kwam ook niet lekker van zijn plek, en in het drukke middenveld kwam de Belg in aanraking met De Jong, om vervolgens door Markelov van de baan gedrukt te worden. De Belg kwam naar de pits voor een nieuwe voorvleugel, maar de kans op een goede klassering was vervlogen. Vandoorne zou als 22e over de streep komen.

Op een prachtig gevecht van Berthon, Abt, Marciello en Cecotto na gebeurde er gedurende de race weinig, totdat in de slotfase het gevecht om de punten werd geopend. Palmer, Trummer en Leal reden binnen drie seconden van elkaar in de rondte, terwijl de overige rijders in de top tien in een verhitte strijd verwikkeld waren.

Bij het vallen van de vlag waren het Felipe Nasr en Stéphane Richelmi die de top vijf completeerden, achter Palmer, Trummer en Leal. Adrian Quaife-Hobbs, Mitch Evans en Rene Binder gingen er met de laatste puntjes vandoor. De Jong greep net als gisteren naast de punten. Hij werd wederom elfde.

Komt toch de onervarenheid naar boven bij Vandoorne. Zonde na zo'n fantastische dag.

  Ach, alle talenten maken fouten. Neemt niet weg dat McLaren van alle teams op dit moment de meest indrukwekkende talenten in hun opleidingsprogramma hebben zitten.
  
  Nyck de Vries heeft namelijk ook weer eens laten zien waarom hij bij McLaren zit, en hij lijkt na een periode van wennen aan de overstap naar de autosport nu helemaal op z'n plek te zitten.
  
  Wat zou het toch mooi zijn als we over een paar jaar deze coureurs in de F1 kunnen bewonderen.
