Evans pakt eerste zege van het seizoen in sprintrace

Mitch Evans heeft zijn eerste zege van het seizoen binnen. De coureur uit Nieuw-Zeeland pakte Arthur Pic bij het ingaan van de laatste ronde. Pic probeerde van alles om de leiding terug te pakken, maar moest de zege uiteindelijk toch laten aan Evans. Stoffel Vandoorne, de leider in kampioenschap, completeerde het podium met een derde plaats.

Jordan King startte van pole-position, maar kon al snel gaan douchen. De Brit kwam niet helemaal lekker van zijn plek bij de start en kwam in botsing met Norman Nato in de eerste bocht. Voor beide coureurs was de wedstrijd voorbij. Pic had de leiding gepakt na de eerste bocht en wist de eerste plek tot de laatste ronde vast te houden. Evans reed de hele wedstrijd dicht achter Pic en sloeg in de laatste ronde toe.

Stoffel Vandoorne begon de race als vijfde en kwam na de start als vierde door. De Belg wist Richie Stanaway nog te passeren en pakte zo wederom een podiumplaats. Sergey Siroktin kende een mooie inhaalrace. De Rus startte als twintigste en finishte uiteindelijk als vijfde. De overige rijders die punten scoorden waren Sergio Canamasas, Raffaele Marciello en Rene Binder. Binder maakte dit weekend zijn terugkeer in de sport bij MP Motorsport. De Indonesiër Rio Haryanto finishte buiten de punten en is daarmee definitief uitgeschakeld voor het kampioenschap. Alexander Rossi is de enige die nog kans maakt om Vandoorne van het kampioenschap af te houden.

Meinder van Buuren zal zich ongetwijfeld meer hebben voorgesteld van zijn GP2-debuut. De Nederlander stapte in als vervanger van Daniël de Jong bij MP Motorsport maar zijn weekend ging van kwaad tot erger. Na een teleurstellende kwalificatie, waar Van Buuren niet verder kwam dan de laatste plaats was de hoofdrace ook snel voorbij door een crash. De wagen van Van Buuren was dermate beschadigd dat hij in de sprintrace niet in actie kon komen.
