Pastor Maldonado domineert eerste GP2-race in Turkije

Pastor Maldonado heeft zojuist met een dominant optreden de eerste GP2-race van het weekend op zijn naam geschreven. De coureur uit Venezuela eindigde maar liefst 20 seconden voor Davide Valsecchi. Giedo van der Garde eindigde de eerste race als vijfde.

Davide Valsecchi startte de race vanaf de pole position, maar maakte een slechte start mee en zag meteen Pastor Maldonado langzij komen. Vanaf dat moment verdween Maldonado aan de horizon en werd daarna niet meer bedreigd voor de overwinning. Giedo van der Garde kende ook een goede start en won één plaats.

Valsecchi kon het tempo van Maldonado totaal niet volgen en Sergio Perez begon aan te dringen bij de Italiaan. Bij de pitstops was Perez wat sneller weg en nam de tweede positie over. Tegelijkertijd behield Van der Garde zijn vijfde plaats. Achter de Nederlander verdedigde Oliver Turvey wat te enthousiast ten opzichte van Dani Clos en kreeg daar een drive trough-penalty voor. Omdat Turvey tijdens zijn straf te hard door de pitlane reed kreeg de Brit een tweede drive trough-penalty en speelde daardoor geen rol van betekenis meer in de race.

Na de pitstops was het tempo van Perez echter ingezakt en kon Valsecchi redelijk gemakkelijk zijn tweede positie weer terug overnemen. Enkele ronden later begon ook Sam Bird aan te dringen bij Perez, maar de twee raakten elkaar. Perez' auto liep schade op aan de achterkant en reageerde niet meer optimaal. Bird kon Perez, ondanks een beschadigde voorvleugel, passeren en pakte zo de derde plaats. Perez eindigde als vierde, slechts een tiende voor op teamgenoot Giedo van der Garde.

Luiz Razia pakte een keurige zesde positie, gevolgd door Michael Herck en Christian Vietoris op de achtste positie. Dani Clos eindigde, ondanks zijn tweede drive trough-penalty's, als negende.
