Nato pakt eerste GP2-overwinning in hoofdrace

Racing Engineering-coureur Norman Nato heeft zijn eerste overwinning gepakt in de GP2. Red Bull-talent Pierre Gasly startte van pole position en had de race lange tijd onder controle, maar een late inhaalactie van Nato zorgde ervoor dat de Fransman zijn pole niet kon omzetten in een overwinning.

Het gevecht om de overwinning was spannend: de top drie reed lang dicht bij elkaar. Deze top drie bestond uit Gasly, Nato en Sergey Sirotkin. Sirotkin probeerde vlak voor de verplichte pitstops de tweede plaats te pakken van Nato, maar strandde na een spin waarbij de Rus zijn motor liet afslaan.

Het stilvallen van Sirotkin zorgde voor een Safety Car. Het betrof al de tweede Safety Car van de race. Na de openingsronde werd de race ook al geneutraliseerd vanwege een crash van Luca Ghiotto. Ghiotti liep in het drukke middenveld bij de start een lekke band op en vloog in de muur.

Na het vrijgeven van de race leek Gasly de race onder controle te hebben. De Fransman reed zijn eerste stint op de harde banden, in de tweede stint werd er gewisseld naar de zachte banden. Nato voelde zich beter thuis op de zachte banden en plaatste een succesvolle inhaalactie na het vrijgeven van de race.

Gasly wilde uiteraard tweede worden, maar daar stak DAMS-coureur Nicolas Latifi een stokje voor. Latifi wist met een mooie actie voorbij te gaan aan Gasly. Gasly leek zelfs nog van het podium af te vallen: de Rus Artem Markelov was veel sneller en wanneer er geen derde Safety Car was gekomen was Gasly zijn derde plaats zo goed als zeker kwijt geweest.

De race finishte uiteindelijk achter de Safety Car omdat Rafaele Marciello gespind was in bocht 4. Daniël de Jong kende weinig succes op het circuit van Barcelona: de Nederlander wist geen punten te scoren.

Morgenvroeg wordt de sprintrace van het eerste GP2-weekend van het seizoen verreden.
