King wint natte sprintrace, De Jong laatste

Jordan King heeft zijn pole position voor de sprintrace omgezet in een overwinning. De Brit controleerde de wedstrijd, die vanwege een natte baan achter de Safety Car startte. Oliver Rowland en Alex Lynn maakten het Britse feestje compleet door als tweede en derde te finishen.

Bij de start werd besloten om vanwege de natte baan achter de Safety Car te beginnen. De GP3-race was kort daarvoor al in drijfnatte omstandigheden verreden. Dat de natte baan weinig grip bood, bewees Daniël de Jong. De Nederlander, in dienst van MP Motorsport, spinde op weg naar de startgrid maar kon de race wel gewoon aanvangen.

Toen het veld werd vrijgegeven leidde King de dans met achter zich de Fransman Norman Nato. Halverwege de race kreeg Nato problemen met ogenschijnlijk zijn banden en viel steeds verder terug. Rowland wist Nato te verschalken en pakte zo zijn tweede podiumplaats van het seizoen.

Na Spielberg leidt Raffaele Marciello het kampioenschap. De Italiaan, vorig jaar derde rijder voor Sauber in de Formule 1, finishte als vierde. Opmerkelijk is dat Marciello nog geen enkel podium pakte, maar wel de meest constante factor is. Antonio Giovinazzi, die in Bakoe nog beide races winnend afsloot, finishte als vijfde.

Voor MP Motorsport was het een race met wisselende successen. Daar waar Rowland het Nederlandse team weer een podium bezorgde, finishte De Jong als laatste. De Jong reed na de herstart even in het veld maar finishte uiteindelijk als laatste. De Nederlander probeerde aan het einde van de race nog een gok te wagen door op slicks te gaan rijden, maar ook dat leverde niets op.

De volgende races in de GP2 zijn volgende week op het circuit van Silverstone.

Wat een drol van een rijder inmiddels. Het opnemen voor hem had ik recent al opgegeven, nu weet ik zeker dat ik goed zit. Wordt helaas nooit een aanwinst voor deze klasse, enkel en alleen veldvulling geworden. Dure veldvulling.

Vast een aardige kerel enzovoort maar totaal geen racer pur sang.
