Gasly pakt eenvoudig pole position, De Jong achttiende

Pierre Gasly, winnaar van de hoofdrace op Silverstone twee weken geleden, heeft zeer eenvoudig de pole position voor zich opgeeist voor de hoofdrace van de GP2. Op de Hungaroring was het Franse Red Bull-talent een halve seconde sneller dan Sergey Sirotkin van ART Grand Prix. Antonio Giovinazzi reed de derde tijd. Daniel de Jong kwam niet verder dan een achttiende tijd.

Het was bewolkt, maar zeer warm op de Hungaroring toen de heren aan hun kwalificatiesessie begonnen. Halverwege de sessie had Gasly al de snelste tijd staan met meer dan zes tiende marge op de nummer twee. Het gat werd nog wel iets kleiner, maar een halve seconde is een flink gat in de GP2.

Voor MP Motorsport verliep de kwalificatie zeer teleurstellend. Het Nederlandse team heeft Oliver Rowland momenteel aan de leiding staan in het kampioenschap, maar de laatste kampioen van de World Series by Renault kwam er in de kwalificatie niet aan te pas. De Brit kwalificeerde zich slechts als zeventiende met teamgenoot De Jong in zijn kielzog.

De kwalificatie kende los van de matige prestatie van Rowland weinig verrassingen. De hoofdrace op de Hungaroring begint morgen om 15:40 uur.
