Pastor Maldonado wint eerste race, harde crash Tung

Pastor Maldonado heeft zojuist de eerste GP2-race van het weekend in Hongarije op zijn naam geschreven. De leider in het kampioenschap bleef Christian Vietoris zes seconden voor op de finish. Giedo van der Garde eindigde als vijfde, terwijl Ho-Pin Tung een harde crash maakte.

De race kende een zeer rommelige start. Davide Valsecchi, die zich als tweede had gekwalificeerd, kwam niet weg bij de start van de race waardoor er een nieuwe opwarmronde werd ingezet. De auto's stonden nauwelijks stil voor de start van de race, waarna Sam Bird niet wegkwam en moest, samen met Valsecchi en Adrian Zaugg, vanuit de pits starten.

Daardoor mochten Oliver Turvey en Pastor Maldonado vanaf de eerste rij vertrekken bij de start. Turvey kwam slecht weg, waardoor Maldonado zonder al te veel moeite als eerste door de eerste bocht ging. Christian Vietoris en Sergio Perez volgden, terwijl Giedo van der Garde na een uitstekende start als vierde door de eerste bocht ging.

In de eerste bocht ging het wederom mis. Jules Bianchi spinde en werd vol geraakt door Ho-Pin Tung. Daarna knalde ook Rodolfo Gonzales nog achterop de bolide van Tung. De race werd meteen geneutraliseerd en vlak daarna helemala stilgelegd. Tung werd per helikopter naar het ziekenhuis vervoerd, terwijl Bianchi per auto naar het medisch centrum gebracht werd. De eerste berichten melden echter dat het goed gaat met beide heren.

Na twintig minuten kon de race herstart worden achter de Safety Car, waarbij Maldonado gemakkelijk de leiding behield. Enkele ronden later kon de Safety Car weer uitrukken na een crash tussen Luiz Razia en Alberto Valerio, die hard in de banden terecht kwam. Ook bij de volgende herstart behield Maldonado gemakkelijk de leiding, gevolgd door Vietoris.

Zo bleef het ook tot aan de finish, waarbij Vietoris zes seconden achter Maldonado over de streep kwam. Sergio Perez pakte de derde plaats, terwijl Turvey in de slotfase nog voorbij ging aan Van der Garde nadat hij een foutje maakte. De Nederlander eindigde als vijfde, gevolgd door Jerome D'Ambrosio, Michael Herck en Giacomo Ricci.

Tung moest blijkbaar toch naar het ziekenhuis voor een scheurtje in een lendenwervel.
