Gasly en Giovinazzi voeren het veld aan

Prema-teamgenoten Pierre Gasly en Antonio Giovinazzi zijn de belangrijkste gegadigden voor de GP2-titel dit jaar en dat maakten ze in de training in Maleisië meer dan waar. Gasly was de snellere van de twee in de eerste sessie op Sepang, met een tiende voorsprong op Giovinazzi.

Raffaele Marciello completeerde de top drie. Racing Engineering-duo Norman Nato en Jordan King liet ook nog tijden onder de 1:43 noteren. MP Motorsport-coureur Oliver Rowland was beste van de rest op de zesde plaats en de eerste in de 1:43.

Diens teamgenoot Daniël de Jong kwam niet verder dan een negentiende plaats. Johnny Cecotto, de vervanger van de zieke Arthur Pic bij Rapax, moest genoegen nemen met de laatste plaats.

    Gasly is goed bezig. Het zal nog spannend worden voor Kvyat of hij nog genoeg kan laten zien bij Toro Rosso, of dat hij zijn plaats voor 2017 zal moeten afstaan aan Gasly...

    Straf hoe Rowland zuiver op talent in een mindere bolide zich tot in de buurt van de toppers kan handhaven.
    Sirotkin en Lynn laten dit jaar echt afweten terwijl debutantteam Prema het bewonderenswaardig goed doet.
