Pierre Gasly is het weekend waarin hij hoopt de titel in de GP2 te veroveren voortvarend begonnen. De Fransman was in de vrije training op Yas Marina Circuit de snelste met een 1:50.940. Hij dook als enige onder de 1:51. Concurrent Antonio Giovinazzi moest genoegen nemen met de derde plek.

Alex Lynn wurmde zich op de tweede plaats tussen de teamgenoten van Prema Racing in. Nobuharu Matsushita en Norman Nato completeren de top vijf. Daniel de Jong sloot de sessie af op een achttiende plaats. De Nederlander reed een persoonlijk beste tijd van 1:52.987.

Louis Deletraz kon bij zijn eerste sessie in de GP2 niet meteen hoge ogen gooien. De Zwitser, afkomstig uit de Formule V8 3.5, kwam niet verder dan de eenentwintigste tijd. Mitch Evans reed slechts zeven ronden. De Nieuw-Zeelander viel stil bij bocht 7.
