GP2 koerst af op naamswijziging voor 2017

De GP2 luistert vanaf dit jaar waarschijnlijk naar de naam Formule 2. Dat is indirect het gevolg van de overname van de Formule 1 door Liberty Media. Tot de commerciële rechten voor de koningsklasse van de autosport behoorden ook de rechten voor de GP2 en de GP3.

De internationale autosportbond FIA onderhandelde vorig jaar al met de GP2 om de naam te veranderen in Formule 2. Die gesprekken belandden in een impasse na tussenkomst door Bernie Ecclestone. De voormalig commerciële baas van de Formule 1 liet de FIA weten dat de GP2 beter af is als zelfstandige klasse dan onder de vlag van de internationale autosportbond.

Nu Ecclestone het veld heeft geruimd, zijn de FIA en de GP2 weer in overleg over een naamswijziging. Bronnen schatten de kans dat de opstapklasse omgedoopt wordt in op minstens vijftig procent, meldt Autosport. Het nieuwe GP2/F2-seizoen vangt in het weekend van 15 en 16 april aan. De World Motor Sport Council zou de bijeenkomst van 9 maart kunnen gebruiken om over deze kwestie te stemmen.

      Ja, historische naam en klinkt ook (qua hiërarchie) logischer.
      GP3 zal ongewijzigd blijven want de naam Formule 3 wordt al gebruikt.

    In dat geval hebben we er gelukkig niet NOG een klasse erbij. Toen het Superlicentie systeem uitkwam stond F2 op de lijst terwijl er nog niets bekend was over wat die klasse moest gaan inhouden, en leek het erop dat er naast GP2 dus nog een F2 klasse zou komen.
    Dat zou het nog onoverzichtelijker maken met al die raceklasses.

    Als GP2 nu Formule 2 wordt, dan juich ik dat toe. Wel zou ik graag zien dat men de klasse omgebogen wordt naar hoe F2 ooit was. Dus met meerdere chassis etc. Zo wordt die klasse niet alleen een kweekvijver voor rijders, maar ook nieuwe ontwerpers en technisch personeel.

    De Neweys en de Brawns van de toekomst moeten ook de kans krijgen om zich te ontwikkelen. Bovendien is de stap ook een stukje kleiner om als team van F2 naar F1 over te stappen, omdat er dan al dingen "in huis" zijn bij zo'n team om een eigen auto te bouwen.

    Verder moeten ze af zien van dat rare "reverse grid" systeem. Alleen maar onoverzichtelijk voor F1 teams om te zien welke rijders constant zijn. Bovendien is het onlogisch, oneerlijk en ligt het niet in lijn met F1.

    Ik hoop dat men vanaf 2018 wat gaan hervormen in die klasse.
