Aziatische serie begint in 2008

De organisatoren van de GP2 hebben bevestigd dat een Aziatische versie van de raceklasse volgend jaar van start zal gaan. De nieuw op te zetten serie begint in januari en duurt tot en met april. De GP2 Asia Series 2008 zal minstens drie races op de kalender hebben staan waarvan er twee waarschijnlijk in een Grand Prix-weekend van de Formule 1 worden verreden.

GP2-organisator Bruno Michel: Het is van evident belang dat de GP2 Asia Series een goede link met de Formule 1 bewerkstelligt. Voor ons is het belangrijk dat wij als 'support act' bij de Aziatische Formule 1-races worden opgenomen.

Bernie Ecclestone is in ieder geval fan van de nieuwe serie. Autosport wordt steeds populairder in het Midden-Oosten en Azië en met deze raceklasse spelen we daar goed op in. Bovendien kunnen talenten uit die regio nu eerder een overstap maken naar een betere serie en wellicht zelfs wel de Formule 1.
