Ghiotto pakt derde pole uit carrière

Luca Ghiotto heeft de pole position gepakt voor de eerste GP3-wedstrijd op de Red Bull Ring. Esteban Ocon zette de tweede tijd neer, terwijl de derde startpositie wordt ingenomen door Alex Palou.

De dreigende regen hield de coureurs in hun greep. Meteen reden ongeveer alle coureurs naar buiten om zo snel mogelijk een snelle tijd te rijden. Midden in de training, toen Ghiotto al de snelste was, vielen er inderdaad wat regendruppels. De regen zette echter niet door, waardoor de baan richting het einde van de training sneller werd.

Nadat alle coureurs de pits bezocht hadden, reden achtereenvolgens Marvin Kirchhöfer, Ocon, Palou en Ocon de snelste tijd. De pole position kwam echter voor de tweede keer dit jaar terecht bij Ghiotto, die vlak voor het vallen van de vlag de snelste tijd reed. Met een 1:19.350 was hij ruim twee tienden van een seconde sneller dan Ocon. Palou en Kirchhöfer bezetten de tweede startrij, terwijl Emil Bernstorff de top vijf afrondde.

De eerste race start om 17.20 uur Nederlandse tijd.
