Ghiotto en Tunjo pakken eerste zeges in Oostenrijk

De GP3-wedstrijden op de Red Bull Ring zijn gewonnen door Luca Ghiotto op zaterdag en Oscar Tunjo op zondag. Voor beide coureurs betekende het de eerste zege in de GP3.

Ghiotto startte de eerste race van pole position, voor Esteban Ocon en Alex Palou. Terwijl Ocon nog voor de eerste bocht Ghiotto passeerde, bleef Palou staan op de grid. Hetzelfde gold voor Mitchell Gilbert. Kevin Ceccon kon hem niet ontwijken en zorgde daarmee voor een safety car.

Vlak nadat de safety car weer de pits in reed, wist Ghiotto Ocon te passeren voor de leiding. Hij reed snel zo'n vijf seconden weg bij Ocon, die onder druk kwam te staan van de als achtste gestarte Antonio Fuoco. Fuoco had niet lang nodig om de Fransman te passeren.

In de resterende ronden kwamen de eerste posities van Ghiotto en Fuoco niet meer in gevaar. Ocon kwam nog onder druk te staan van Emil Bernstorff, maar die kon er niet voorbij. Ghiotto pakte zo zijn eerste zege in de GP3, voor Fuoco en Ocon.

De tweede race begon met Ralph Boschung op pole position. Hij behield de leiding na de start, maar dat was vooral te danken aan Antonio Fuoco. Hij maakte contact met teamgenoot Jann Mardenborough en vloog daarna tegen de als tweede gestarte Sandy Stuvik. Het incident bracht de safety car naar buiten.

Na de herstart kwam Boschung meteen onder druk van Marvin Kirchhöfer te staan. Toen Kirchhöfer Boschung passeerde, kon zijn teamgenoot Ocon er meteen ook voorbij. Ook Ghiotto, winnaar van de eerste race op de Red Bull Ring, volgde niet lang daarna.

De als negende gestarte Oscar Tunjo was de volgende die Boschung voorbij ging. Ook Ghiotto en Ocon moesten er snel aan geloven. Ook Kirchhöfer moest er aan geloven door een mooie actie buitenom. Tunjo won zo voor het eerst een GP3-race, drie seconden voor Kirchhöfer en Ocon.

Ghiotto is de leider na het weekend in Oostenrijk. Met 64 punten heeft hij er tien meer dan Ocon. Kirchhöfer is derde in het kampioenschap met 47 punten. De volgende races zijn over twee weken, op 4 en 5 juli op het circuit van Silverstone.
