Ocon pakt titel in extremis

Een dag na zijn kwijtgeraakte zege heeft Esteban Ocon de sprintrace in Abu Dhabi als derde afgesloten. Met zijn derde plek heeft Ocon ook het kampioenschap binnengesleept. Het is het tweede kampioenschap voor de Fransman in twee jaar tijd, Ocon werd vorig jaar kampioen in de Formule 3.

Ocon dacht gisteren al de champagne te kunnen ontkurken, maar de wedstrijdleiding stak daar een stokje voor. Ocon kreeg een tijdstraf van vijf seconden nadat hij in de openingsfase buiten de baan was gegaan en daar mogelijk voordeel uit gehaald. Door de straf viel Ocon terug van de eerste plaats naar de vierde plaats. Ocon had bij het ingaan van de sprintrace een achterstand van zes punten op Ghiotto.

Ocon startte de race als vijfde, maar liet zich bij de start meteen zien. Bij de start werd Ghiotto geraakt en rukte Ocon op naar plek drie. De derde plek was genoeg voor het kampioenschap. Ocon bleef gedurende de race op de derde plek rijden en nam geen risico's meer. Ocon werd eerder dit weekend bevestigd als coureur voor Mercedes in de Formule 1. Welke rol Ocon binnen Mercedes gaat krijgen is nog niet bekend.
