Fukuzumi zegeviert in hoofdrace, Schothorst laatste

Nirei Fukuzumi heeft de openingsrace van het GP3-seizoen als winnaar afgesloten. De Japanner kreeg de zege zeker niet cadeau en vocht lange tijd met Jack Aitken. Aitken viel in de slotfase stil met een technisch probleem, waardoor Fukuzumi onbedreigd naar de winst kon rijden. Steijn Schothorst kende een ongelukkige race en finishte op de laatste plaats.

Jack Aitken startte de race van pole, maar kwam slecht weg. Dit bood Fukuzumi de mogelijkheid de leiding te nemen, Aitken moest vol in de verdediging om Boccolacci van zich af te houden. Boccalacci wist Aitken te passeren, maar Aitken wist terug te slaan.

Voor Steijn Schothorst liep de ouverture van het seizoen op een drama uit. De Nederlander kwam erg slecht van zijn plek en lag na de eerste ronde een na laatste. Vooraan wisten Fukuzumi en Aitken een klein gaatje te slaan. De GP3 kende in Barcelona een primeur: het is voor het eerst dat de klasse met DRS reed, veel coureurs maakten echter geen gebruik van de extra topsnelheid die het systeem biedt.

Halverwege de race leek Fukuzumi zich op te kunnen maken voor de grootste beker, Aitken begon de aansluiting te verliezen. Uiteindelijk wist de Brit zich weer te herpakken en wist hij in de slotfase nog druk uit te oefenen op Fukuzumi. Fukuzumi gaf echter niet thuis en toen de auto van Aitken stuk ging, was de zege van de Japanner definitief.

Door het wegvallen van Aitken had Fukuzumi een comfortabele voorsprong en werd de zege zonder problemen binnen gehaald. Pulcini finishte als tweede voor Lorandi. Steijn Schothorst kwam zijn slechte start niet meer te boven en kwam als laatste over de meet. De sprintrace in de GP3 begint straks om 09:25 uur.
