Kan Russell de titelstrijd voortijdig beslissen?

George Russell heeft in het gehalveerde weekend op Monza weer goede zaken gedaan in het kampioenschap en hij stevent in razend tempo af op de titel in de GP3. In theorie is het mogelijk dat de jonge Brit de titelstrijd in het weekend op Jerez al beslist.

Het talent uit de Mercedes-opleiding staat op dit moment namelijk 43 punten voor op naaste belager Jack Aitken. In een GP3-weekend zijn maximaal 48 punten te behalen; 25 en 15 voor de winst in de hoofd- en de sprintrace, vier voor pole position en twee keer twee voor de snelste raceronde.

Russell moet in Jerez dus vijf punten of meer uitlopen op Aitken om zichzelf in het voorlaatste weekend al tot kampioen te kronen. Geen wonder dus dat Aitken hoopt dat de GP3 de geannuleerde race van Monza later nog ergens inhaalt. Dat zou zijn kansen op de titel nog enigszins vergroten.
