MP Motorsport werpt Kari reddingsboei toe

Niko Kari racet het komend seizoen voor MP Motorsport in de GP3 Series. Het wordt zijn tweede seizoen in de klasse. Het Nederlandse team maakt in 2018 zijn debuut in de GP3, nadat het de inschrijving van DAMS overnam. Kari behaalde vorig jaar zijn eerste overwinning in de GP3.

Kari stapt in bij MP Motorsport na een zeer succesvolle eindejaarstest op het circuit van Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi. De Fin noteerde daarin op twee van de drie dagen de snelste tijd. Kari's vorm was de aanleiding tot gesprekken die uiteindelijk tot een contract tussen het voormalige Red Bull-talent en MP hebben geleid.

"Ik ben enorm blij dat ik voor MP Motorsport mag uitkomen", zei Kari. "We hebben tijdens de test erg goed samengewerkt. Sterker nog, onze samenwerking was zo goed dat ik erg graag deel wilde uitmaken van het team. Ik ben blij dat we tot zaken konden komen voor mijn tweede seizoen in de GP3 en hoop dat we onze testvorm in het seizoen kunnen herhalen!"

"Het is geweldig dat Niko voor ons gaat rijden na de uitstekende vorm die we samen tijdens de GP3-test in Abu Dhabi hebben laten zien", aldus Sander Dorsman, teammanager van MP Motorsport. "Ik heb er alle vertrouwen in dat we op die prestaties kunnen voortbouwen en Niko aan meer GP3-zeges kunnen helpen."

Kari eindigde het vorige GP3-seizoen als tiende. Hij bekroonde zijn seizoen met een overwinning in race 1 in Abu Dhabi. Eerder in het seizoen behaalde hij ook al een podiumklassering door derde te worden in race 2 op Silverstone.

Na zijn titel in de SMP NEZ Formule 4 in 2015 - zijn debuutseizoen in de autosport - promoveerde Kari in 2016 naar het Europees kampioenschap Formule 3, waarin hij een overwinning en vijf podiumplaatsen in de wacht sleepte. Intussen maakte hij op Spa-Francorchamps ook zijn GP3-debuut, als tijdelijke vervanger van Ralph Boschung.
