Hughes pakt eerste seizoenszege na crash top 3 in eerste bocht

Jake Hughes heeft zijn eerste seizoenszege gepakt in de GP3 Series. De Brit van ART Grand Prix bleef Pedro Piquet voor in een race die al na de eerste bocht zonder de eerste drie van de startopstelling verder moest.

Giuliano Alesi en Ryan Tveter kwamen bij de start beter weg dan polesitter David Beckmann en wilden aan beide kanten voorbijgaan aan de Duitser in de eerste bocht. Dat lukte niet: Tveter kwam iets naar de buitenkant en zette daarmee een kettingbotsing in gang, die de drie koplopers uit de race nam. Hughes en Piquet konden daardoor meteen de kop nemen, terwijl er kortstondig een virtual safety car uitgegeven werd.

Na de virtual safety car moest Piquet kortstondig verdedigen tegenover Leonardo Pulcini, maar kort daarna was het gaatje naar Hughes gedicht en nam de Braziliaan zelfs de leiding over. Twee ronden later counterde Hughes met DRS terug. Daarna kon Piquet geen echte vuist meer maken en kon de ART-coureur naar de winst rijden. Het verschil tussen Hughes en Piquet was op de meet 0,8 seconde. Pulcini voltooide het podium.
