Newgarden en Rossi in beeld als vervanger van Montoya bij Penske

Na twee seizoenen bij Penske staat de positie van voormalig Formule 1-coureur Juan Pablo Montoya bij het team ter discussie. In 2015, het eerste seizoen voor Montoya in IndyCar sinds 2000 wist Montoya tot grootste prestaties te komen met winst in de Indy500 en een tweede plaats in het kampioenschap. Het tweede jaar viel echter enorm tegen met een achtste plaats in het kampioenschap. Onder andere Josef Newgarden en voormalig Manor-coureur Alexander Rossi zijn kandidaten om de plek van Montoya over te nemen.

Rossi is sinds zijn winst in de Indy500 in mei van dit jaar een felbegeerde coureur. De Amerikaan komt na het verliezen van zijn stoeltje in de Formule 1 uit voor Andretti Autosport, een subtopper in IndyCars. Josef Newgarden staat al langer op het lijstje bij de topteams.

Newgarden maakte gisteren bekend zijn huidige werkgever Ed Carpenter Racing te verlaten. Dit zwelt de geruchten over een mogelijke overstap naar Penske alleen maar aan. De verwachting is dat Penske volgende week bekend maakt wie de vierde bolide gaat besturen komend seizoen. Will Power, kersvers kampioen Simon Pagenaud en Helio Castroneves liggen al vast voor volgend jaar.

Dit is al het zoveelste artikel waarin staat dat Montoya 2 seizoenen voor Penske rijdt, maar dit jaar was zijn derde seizoen, hij kwam immers in 2014 terug!

Toch wel benieuwd wat Old Monty gaat doen als oom Roger hem echt ut het zitje werkt. Newgardens plek innemen bij ECR lijkt mij uitgesloten aangezien Carpenter en Montoya niet de beste vrienden zijn. Zover ik weet aast Ganassi ook op Rossi of Newgardens, dus daar is ook alles vol. Andretti als alternatief dan maar? Ik meende dat men daar Frijns wel hoog had zitten na een goede test deze zomer.
Dus het wordt nog lastig voor Montoya om in de IndyCar te blijven. Maar een roemloos afscheid verdient hij zeker niet.

Rossi lijkt me een prima kandidaat voor het team van Haas in de F1.
Een Amerikaan bij een Amerikaans team lijkt me goed voor de F1, zeker nu er plannen zijn voor een 2e race in de VS. En Rossi is volgens mij ook een betere coureur dan Gutierrez.

Vorig seizoen werd hij genaaid door de 'dubbele punten' regel in de laatste race. Anders was hij gewoon kampioen geweest.
Het zou jammer zijn als hij er nu word uitgestuurd. Aan de andere kant zo werkt het in Amerika wel. Iedereen die niet presteert word er zonder pardon uitgetrapt, ook in het zaken leven.
