Derde pole van het seizoen voor Will Power

Een zege zat er dit seizoen nog niet in voor Will Power, maar de Australische Penske-coureur reed wel alweer voor de derde keer dit jaar naar pole position. De mei-maand op Indianapolis kent dit weekend de aftrap met een race op het normale circuit. Vanaf maandag beginnen de eerste trainingen voor de Indy500 en zal Fernando Alonso voor het eerst deelnemen aan een officiële sessie.

Normaal gesproken vinden de IndyCar-races plaats op zondag, maar vanwege de Indy500 werd er gistermiddag al gekwalificeerd. De race is vanavond en is live te volgen via het officiële YouTube-kanaal van IndyCar. Waar Power schitterde, was het voor Simon Pagenaud een matige kwalificatie. De teamgenoot van Power leidt het kampioenschap, maar kwalificeerde zich slechts als zevende.

Juan Pablo Montoya maakte indruk bij zijn terugkeer en kwalificeerde zich meteen als vijfde. Montoya reed in 2015 en 2016 in vaste dient bij Penske, maar verloor zijn stoeltje vanwege tegenvallende resultaten. Montoya werd voor aanvang van het seizoen al bevestigd om deel te nemen aan de Indy500 en daar is de race op het normale circuit bijgekomen.

Dat Penske sterk is op Indianapolis is duidelijk: net als in de trainingen bestond de volledige top-drie uit auto's van Penske. Achter Power kwalificeerden Helio Castroneves en Josef Newgarden zich als tweede en derde. De race in Indianapolis begint vanavond om 21:40 uur Nederlandse tijd.
