Graham Rahal op pole voor eerste race Belle Isle

Een week na de Indy 500, de belangrijkste race van het jaar, racen de IndyCar-coureur dit weekend alweer. Strijdtoneel is het stratencircuit van Belle Isle, gelegen in de Amerikaanse stad Detroit. Graham Rahal reed de tweede tijd, maar mag dankzij een straf van polesitter Helio Castroneves van pole starten.

Castroneves raakte de pole kwijt vanwege te hard rijden tijdens een gele vlag situatie. Mikhail Aleshin was de oorzaker van het geel, de Rus boorde zijn bolide bijna in de bandenstapels aan het einde van het rechte stuk.

Rahal zat er in de kwalificatie dus goed bij en heeft een gelukje door de straf van Castroneves. Alexander Rossi start de race als vierde, Indy500-winnaar Takuma Sato mag als derde beginnen. Esteban Gutierrez deed geen gekke dingen tijdens zijn eerste kwalificatie in IndyCar: de Mexicaanse oud Formule 1-coureur vangt de race als 21e aan in de auto van Dale Coyne Racing. De eerste race op Belle Isle start vanaf op 21:40 uur Nederlandse tijd en is live te volgen via het officiële YouTube-kanaal van IndyCar.
