Alexander Rossi voor het eerst op pole

Voor oud Formule 1-coureur Alexander Rossi kan de week nu al niet meer stuk: de Amerikaan tekende eerder dit jaar bij tot en met 2019 bij Andretti Autosport en start de race op het circuit van Watkins Glen ook nog eens van pole. Het is voor het eerst dat Rossi een IndyCar-race vanaf de eerste startplek mag starten.

De verschillen op Watkins Glen waren minimaal. Rossi was slechts 0,05 sneller dan Scott Dixon, Kampioenschapsleider Josef Newgarden volgde op 0.001 seconde van Dixon. Ook Takuma Sato zat er goed bij met een vierde plaats. Ryan Hunter-Reay zorgde ervoor dat het een goede dag werd voor Andretti Autosport, de Amerikaan start als zevende en dat brengt drie bolides van Andretti in de top tien. De top tien wordt besloten door Will Power, Sebastien Bourdais en Graham Rahal.

De race op Watkins Glen start vanavond om 19:40 uur.
