Ed Carpenter Racing strikt Jordan King voor 2018

Voormalig Manor-testrijder en Formule 2-coureur Jordan King zal in 2018 uitkomen voor Ed Carpenter Racing in de IndyCar Series. Dat werd donderdag bekend gemaakt door het in Indianapolis gevestigde team.

De afgelopen drie seizoenen was King actief in de GP2 en haar opvolger, de Formule 2, met een zevende plaats in de eindstand als beste klassering. Meer en meer concurrenten zag hij de overstap wagen naar de Verenigde Staten. Alexander Rossi deed dat het beste met de winst van de Indy 500 in 2016, maar ook Conor Daly en Ed Jones waagden die sprong in het diepe. In 2018 doet King dus hetzelfde: hij zal bij Ed Carpenter Racing racen op de elf reguliere circuits en stratencircuits. Ed Carpenter zelf zal de wedstrijden op ovals afwerken. Spencer Pigot, die de afgelopen twee seizoenen eenzelfde rol vervulde, zal komend seizoen het hele seizoen de wagen met nummer 21 besturen voor het team.

King is blij met de kans en hoopt op deze manier in 2019 een fulltime stoeltje in de IndyCar te veroveren. "Ik heb hard richting dit doel gewerkt. Sinds ik in 2016 de wedstrijd op Sonoma bezocht heb, is dit wat ik wilde. Ik ben erg blij dat dit bekendgemaakt wordt en dankbaar richting Ed dat hij me de kans wil geven. Ik denk dat het racen in Europa zich leent voor stratencircuits en permanente circuits. Dit is een mijlpaal voor mij en persoonlijk vind ik dit een goede manier om te debuteren. Ik focus me op de circuits met bochten naar links en rechts en laat de ovals over aan Ed en de overige experts. Dat helpt mij uiteindelijk in de toekomst."

Ook Ed Carpenter ziet de komst van King zitten. De twee ontmoetten elkaar tijdens de trip van King naar Sonoma. "We zijn enthousiast om Jordan te verwelkomen binnen de ECR-familie. Hij is een gemotiveerde, intelligente en hongerige coureur en dat is precies wat wij zochten. Jordan heeft veel ervaring in Europa en de nodige successen gehad. Ik kan niet wachten om te zien wat zijn mogelijkheden zijn in de IndyCar Series met ECR."
