Binder krijgt vier races bij Juncos Racing in 2018

De IndyCar-plannen van Juncos Racing beginnen steeds meer vorm te krijgen. De renstal heeft aangekondigd dat Rene Binder in 2018 vier races voor het team zal rijden.

In 2017 deed Juncos, dat sinds 2009 in de Amerikaanse ladder richting de IndyCar actief is, voor het eerst mee aan een IndyCar-wedstrijd: ze deden met Sebastian Saavedra en Spencer Pigot mee aan de Indianapolis 500. Komend seizoen zal het van oorsprong Argentijnse team haar activiteiten uitbreiden in de hoogste Amerikaanse open wheel-klasse. Recentelijk werd Indy Lights-kampioen Kyle Kaiser al aangekondigd voor de wedstrijden op Phoenix Raceway, Long Beach en beide evenementen op Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Binder is nu door Juncos gepresenteerd voor de wedstrijden op St. Petersburg, Barber Motorsports Park, Toronto en Mid-Ohio.

Van 2013 tot en met 2015 reed Binder in de GP2 Series. De Oostenrijker reed afgelopen jaar in de Formule V8 3.5, won vier wedstrijden en werd ook vierde in het kampioenschap. Hij zal de eerste Oostenrijkse IndyCar-deelnemer worden sinds 1995, toen Hubert Stromberger actief was. Binder zegt al sinds kinds af aan fan te zijn van de IndyCar. "Ik ben een fan van het pure racen in de IndyCar: de spannende competitie, de traditionele circuits met hobbels en weinig uitloopstroken en de uitdagende wagens zonder stuurbekrachtiging maken het iets speciaals."

Binder kijkt uit naar het rijden in de nieuwe auto's met universele aerokit, die in 2018 zullen debuteren. "Ik weet niet hoe de oude auto was, maar de meeste rijders hebben gezegd dat de nieuwe auto nerveuzer is en minder downforce heeft. Daardoor is hij lastig te besturen en behoorlijk uitdagend. Een andere uitdagende factor zijn de circuits. Die zijn behoorlijk anders dan wat ik gewend ben. Ik heb altijd al op banen als St. Petersburg en Long Beach willen rijden omdat ik van dat soort circuits hou, met weinig uitloopstroken en veel hobbels. Ik vind ze mooier dan sommige Formule 1-circuits."
