'Bump Day keert terug met 34ste inschrijving voor Indy 500'

Na twee seizoenen afwezigheid keert de term Bump Day waarschijnlijk terug tijdens de Indy 500 van 2018. Momenteel zijn er 33 inschrijvingen voor de bekendste IndyCar-race, waardoor de grid in principe vol is. Er worden echter nog meer inschrijvingen verwacht.

Op Bump Day wordt op Indianapolis het kaf van het koren gescheiden. In het verleden werd op de laatste dag van de kwalificatie bepaald welke coureurs wel mee mochten doen aan de race, terwijl de coureurs achter de 33ste startplaats zich niet kwalificeerden. De afgelopen jaren heeft het begrip echter aan kracht ingeboet, omdat er vaak maar één of twee coureurs afvielen na Bump Day. De afgelopen twee jaar kwalificeerden zelfs alle inschrijvingen zich en was Bump Day in feite niet nodig.

In 2018 lijkt dat wel het geval te zijn. Momenteel zijn er al 33 inschrijvingen bevestigd, terwijl het erop lijkt dat Dreyer & Reinbold Racing een extra machine gaat inzetten voor JR Hildebrand. Daarmee komt het aantal inschrijvingen al op 34 en de verwachting is dat het aantal verder gaat toenemen. James Davison zou in gesprek zijn met AJ Foyt Enterprises, Harding Racing en Juncos Racing, terwijl Sebastian Saavedra, Mikhail Aleshin en Buddy Lazier ook nog azen op een zitje. Mogelijk staan er dus tussen de 35 en 38 auto's aan de start van de kwalificatie op Indianapolis. Op de eerste dag van de kwalificatie zal dan meteen beslist worden welke 33 coureurs deelnemen aan de tweede kwalificatiedag en de race.
