Josef Newgarden wint spannende race in Phoenix

Regerend IndyCar-kampioen Josef Newgarden het de eerste ovalrace van het IndyCar-seizoen gewonnen. De Amerikaan maakte als enige van de koplopers in de slotfase een pitstop tijdens een neutralisatie en wist met nog een paar rondjes te gaan de bolide van Robert Wickens te verschalken.

Sebastien Bourdais, winnaar van de seizoensopener in St.Petersburg, startte de race van pole en leidde de eerste 43 ronden. Bij de stops ging het mis: Boardais raakte een van zijn crewleden bij het inrijden van zijn positie in de pitsstraat en verloor veel tijd. Uiteindelijk zou Bourdais de race slechts als dertiende finishen. Ook voor Alexander Rossi ging het fout, maar de winnaar van de Indy500 van 2016 wist zich terug te vechten in de kopgroep.

Door alle stops en de neutralisatie vonden Penske-coureurs Will Power en Josef Newgarden zich op kop. Power zou de race echter niet eindigen, de Australiër parkeerde zijn bolide in de muur. In ronde 229 ging het mis voor Ed Jones en Penske was er als de kippen bij om Newgarden van vers rubber en brandstof te voorzien.

Waar de kop brandstof moest sparen kon Newgarden vol door en met nog vier rondjes te gaan moest debutant Robert Wickens toezien hoe Newgarden er met de zege vandoor ging. Wickens werd nog wel tweede, voor Alexander Rossi en Scott Dixon. Dixon startte de race slechts als zeventiende, maar wist gedurende de race naar voren te werken. De volgende race in het kampioenschap staat volgende week op het programma: de coureurs doen dan het beroemde stratencircuit van Long Beach aan.

-mooie bolides
-spannende races
-inhaalactie's aan de lopende band
-veel meer te bieden voor 't publiek
-coureurs hebben meer inbreng voor 't eindresultaat

  Behalve dan de kwaliteit van de coureurs. Dat een man als Max Chilton, die totaal niks kon in de F1, hoge ogen gooit in de IndyCar, dat zegt genoeg, en zo ook Rossi en nog vele anderen. Alonso kon zelfs Indy winnen zonder enige ervaring. Niet alleen omdat ie zelf talentvol is maar ook omdat t niveau gewoon minder is.

  Damon, verklaar de hoge ogen gooien.
  Afgelopen 2 seizoenen 8 top 10 finishes en snelste ronde in 34 races en verder niks. Dat vind ik geen noemenswaardige prestaties.
