Josef Newgarden snelste op chaotische eerste trainingsdag

De vrije trainingen op Barber Motorsports Park ter voorbereiding op de vierde IndyCar-race leverde voor Team Penske twee keer de snelste tijd op. In de eerste vrije training was Will Power het snelste, maar het was teamgenoot Josef Newgarden die de snelste tijd van de dag reed. De trainingen verliepen uiterst chaotisch.

Zo was er in de slotfase een zware crash van Rene Binder in de auto van Juncos Racing. De Oostenrijker, die de afgelopen jaar actief was in de Formule V8, crashte in de bandenstapels. Het duurde lang voordat de training hervat werd, maar de vertragiing zorgde er wel voor dat de teams en rijders konden rijden in omstandigheden die vergelijkbaar zijn met het tijdstip waarop de kwalificatie wordt verreden.

De meeste rijders kozen er dan ook voor om de rode, zachte band te gaan rijden. Dat zorgde ervoor dat de snelste tijd steeds iets scherper werd gesteld. Spenger Pigot was lang het snelst, maar Josef Newgarden dook er uiteindelijk een tiende onder. Sebastien Bourdais sloot de dag af als derde, gevolgd door Will Power en Alexander Rossi

Voor de crash van Binder waren er ook al incidenten met Simpon Pagenaud en Zach Veach. Beide coureurs maakten uitstapjes naast de baan en dat zorgde voor twee keer een rode vlag. Ook Josef Newgarden maakte een foutje, maar zonder grote gevolgen. De teams met een Chevrolet motor waren het sterkst op het circuit in de staat Alabama.

Het team van Carlin lijkt de juiste snaar ook geraakt te hebben, het Britse team scoorde in Long Beach haar eerste finish in de top tien en zat er ook in de trainingen op Barber Motorsports Park goed bij. Coureur Max Chilton was vierde in de ochtendsessie en besloot de tweede training als elfde.

Voor het team van Schmidt Peterson Motorsports verliepen de trainingen niet goed: het team van James Hinchcliffe en Robert Wickens kende in de tests op het circuit al lastige dagen en ook nu lijkt de formatie een moeilijk weekend tegemoet te gaan.

Vanmiddag om 17:00 uur Nederlandse tijd wordt de laatste vrije training verreden, om 22:00 uur wordt de startopstelling voor de race bepaald.
