Rossi naar pole position op Mid-Ohio, Bourdais crasht

Voor de vierde keer in zijn carrière heeft Alexander Rossi de snelste tijd gereden in de kwalificatie voor een IndyCar-race. Op Mid-Ohio was de voormalig Formule 1-coureur net iets sneller dan Will Power. Kampioenschapsleider Scott Dixon vertrekt vanaf plaats 9.

Rossi en Power plaatsten zich met Max Chilton, Robert Wickens, Ryan Hunter-Reay en Josef Newgarden voor de Fast Six. Door de uitschakeling van Dixon konden Newgarden en Rossi zichzelf een goede uitgangspositie geven om in het kampioenschap in te lopen op de Nieuw-Zeelander. Rossi slaagde daar overtuigend in door pole te pakken. Het was zijn derde pole van het jaar: ook op Long Beach en in Detroit was de Amerikaan van Andretti de snelste in de kwalificatie.

Newgarden slaagde iets minder goed in zijn opzet. De regerend kampioen kwam in zijn Penske niet verder dan de vierde startpositie. Hij moest ook teamgenoot Power en Hunter-Reay voor zich dulden. Wel was hij sneller dan Wickens en Chilton, die in Lexington de top 6 afrondden. Voor Sébastien Bourdais verliep de kwalificatie rampzalig: hij kon geen tijd neerzetten door een crash.
