Spanning in kampioenschap wordt groter na winst Power op Gateway

De IndyCar-race op Gateway Motorsports Park is gewonnen door Will Power. De Australiër was in een strategisch schaakspel beter dan Alexander Rossi en Scott Dixon. De spanning in het kampioenschap is door deze uitslag nog groter geworden, met nog maar twee races te gaan.

Door de afgelaste kwalificatie mocht Dixon vanaf pole position starten. Bijna 150 ronden lang bleef de Nieuw-Zeelander ook op die positie rijden, maar daarna was het Power die het heft in handen nam. De Penske-coureur ging voorbij aan de Ganassi en verloor pas in de slotfase weer kortstondig de leiding. Power ging achttien ronden voor het einde naar binnen voor een korte pitstop, terwijl Rossi dat niet deed.

Rossi wilde met zuinig rijden zijn vierde zege van het seizoen behalen, maar acht ronden voor het einde moest hij Power toch voorbij laten. Die pakte zodoende zijn derde zege van het jaar en hij schuift hierdoor op naar de derde plaats in het kampioenschap. Rossi loopt door zijn tweede plaats en de derde plek van Dixon slechts 3 punten in op de kampioenschapsleider. Dixon heeft, met nog twee races te gaan, 26 punten voorsprong op de voormalig Formule 1-coureur.
