Hunter-Reay steelt pole voor neus Dixon weg

Ryan Hunter-Reay vertrekt in de laatste IndyCar-race van 2018 vanaf pole position. De Andretti Autosport-coureur hielp teamgenoot Alexander Rossi door de pole voor de neus van kampioenschapsleider Scott Dixon weg te graaien. Zelf kwam Rossi niet verder dan de zesde plek.

Dixon verdedigt op Sonoma Raceway een voorsprong van 29 punten op Rossi. Ook Penske-teamgenoten Josef Newgarden en Will Power maken nog kans op de titel, omdat er in deze race dubbele punten worden verdeeld. Met 87 punten is hun achterstand echter aanzienlijk. Dixon leek tijdens de kwalificatie nog een puntje uit te lopen, want hij stond lang op de eerste plek. In extremis dook Hunter-Reay nog onder de tijd van de Nieuw-Zeelander, die daardoor het bonuspunt voor de pole op zijn buik kan schrijven.

Voor Hunter-Reay is het zijn eerste pole position sinds de race in Long Beach in 2014. Achter Dixon start Newgarden als derde, voor Marco Andretti en de verrassende Patricio O'Neal. De 19-jarige Mexicaan werd dit jaar kampioen in de Indy Lights en mocht daarom van Harding Racing meedoen in Sonoma. Dat deed de debutant dus met verve, want hij start zijn eerste IndyCar-race vanaf plek 5.
