Alonso: "Succes Indy 500 hangt af van veel variabelen"

Fernando Alonso geeft toe dat succes in de Indianapolis 500, de race die hij ook volgend jaar weer gaat rijden, vrij willekeurig kan zijn. De Spanjaard rijdt in 2019 namens McLaren in de legendarische race aan de andere kant van de oceaan en hij weet dat het weer lastig gaat worden.

"Het gaat zwaar worden. Ik denk dat de Indianapolis 500 op zichzelf al erg zwaar is en de race is zeer vaak op toeval gebaseerd, zou ik zeggen. Er moeten namelijk veel dingen jouw kant op vallen. De strategie, het geluk, de gele vlaggen op het einde en de Safety Car. Al die dingen."

"Al deze dingen moeten jouw kant op vallen. Ik werk met een nieuwe groep mensen en ik probeer helemaal vanaf het begin te starten. Het gaat best wel uitdagend worden met een nieuw team achter me."

Toch heeft Alonso vertrouwen in de toekomst. "Ik denk dat het allemaal wel goedkomt. McLaren heeft genoeg ervaring en er werken genoeg getalenteerde mensen om competitief te zijn in de Indy 500 en daar gaan we dan ook voor", aldus Alonso tegenover RaceFans.
