Chilton snelste tijdens goedbezochte privétest op Laguna Seca

De IndyCar-teams hebben de voorbereidingen op het nieuwe seizoen afgetrapt met een eerste test op Laguna Seca, tegenwoordig ook wel bekend als WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Max Chilton was de snelste man van de dag, die werd ingekort vanwege regen.

De testdag op Laguna Seca was geen officiële testdag, maar werd door Team Penske georganiseerd. Toch waren vrijwel alle teams in Californië aanwezig voor de eendaagse testsessie, die voorafgaat aan de officiële test van 12 en 13 februari op het Circuit of The Americas. Alleen AJ Foyt Enterprises besloot vanwege de weersverwachting om niet in actie te komen, de overige 21 coureurs waren wel aanwezig.

De omstandigheden waren lastig op Laguna Seca. Een groot aantal coureurs had moeite met het vinden van de juiste rembalans en zochten ook naar grip op het glibberige asfalt. Later op de ochtend begon het zelfs met regenen. Dat weerhield Chilton er niet van om de snelste tijd te rijden. De man van Carlin was met 1:11.2868 was hij bijna een halve tiende sneller dan Ganassi-rookie Felix Rosenqvist. Ryan Hunter-Reay noteerde de derde tijd, voor Jack Harvey en Alexander Rossi.

Regerend kampioen Scott Dixon van Ganassi had het niet makkelijk tijdens de eerste test. Hij noteerde op een kleine halve seconde de achtste tijd, maar was daarmee wel sneller dan de beste Penske-coureur. Dat was SImon Pagenaud op positie 9. Marcus Ericsson eindigde de test op de zeventiende plaats.
