Extra prijzengeld voor pole-win prestatie op COTA

De eerste IndyCar-Classic op het Circuit of the Americas biedt dit weekend het vooruitzicht op een extra prijzenpot voor de coureurs in het NTT IndyCar-kampioenschap. Een bonus van $100.000 zal toegekend worden aan de coureur die zaterdag de pole position haalt en tevens ook de race op zondag wint.

"In september kwamen we allemaal bij elkaar en hadden we het idee om de race bijzonder te maken", vertelde COTA Executive President Rick Abbott. "Het was belangrijk voor ons om ons te onderscheiden en we dachten dat we iets grootst moesten doen. Op deze manier willen we de kwalificatie en de race spannender maken. We kwamen uiteindelijk op het idee dan de polesitter die de racer wint $100.000 extra te geven."

Alexander Rossi is er tevreden mee: "Het is erg gul", vertelde de Andretti Autosport-coureur. "Uiteraard is dit een enorme stimulans om hiervoor te gaan. Het maakt het meteen ook spannend en ik ben er zeker van dat de andere jongen dat ook zo zien."

Afgezien van het geld denkt Marco Andretti dat het circuit de ultieme beloning is: "Ik kijk er naar uit", vertelde de zoon van teameigenaar Michael Andretti. "Dit is een van de meest uitdagende circuits waar ik ooit heb gereden. Ik denk dat dit circuit alles heeft wat een coureur nodig heeft om je race-coureur te voelen. Ik was in gesprek met Dario Franchitti over deze baan (tijdens de test) en hij vind deze baan een absolute aanwinst voor de IndyCar-series."

"Er zijn verschillende sectoren en veel verschillende manieren waarop je het circuit kan benaderen. Er liggen heel veel kansen voor mooie dingen, maar de keerzijde is dat geknoei keihard wordt afgestraft. Het is echt leuk en je moet ontzettend op je hoede zijn."

Marcus Ericsson gaat het weekend in als IndyCar-Rookie maar heeft al vier jaar ervaring op het circuit van COTA. "Het is een van de beste circuits op de Formule 1-kalender en ik vind het geweldig dat IndyCar hier ook gaat rijden", vertelde de Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-coureur. "Het wordt een geweldig weekend en het racen zal fantastisch zijn. Het is al een goed circuit voor de Formule 1, maar sinds ik hier met een IndyCar gereden heb voelt het nog mooier aan. Ik ben er zeker van dat de mensen een hele goede show krijgen te zien", sloot hij af.
