Voormalig Formule 1-coureur Felipe Nasr test voor SPM

Felipe Nasr, voormalig Formule 1-coureur van Sauber en regerend kampioen in de IMSA-Series, is dit weekend te gast bij Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsport op het circuit van Mid-Ohio. De Braziliaan zal maandag testen in de door Honda aangedreven IndyCar.

Nasr wordt op de paddock getipt voor een IndyCar-stoeltje in 2020. Nadat hij in 2015 en 2016 met Marcus Ericsson bij Sauber heeft doorgebracht, koos de 26 jarige Braziliaan uiteindelijk voor een avontuur in de sportscars. Hij belandde bij Action Express Racing en won in zijn eerste seizoen de titel met Eric Curran.

"We willen verschillende coureurs testen", vertelde SPM-directeur Taylor Kiel aan Robin Miller van Racer.com. "We willen er zeker van zijn dat we de beste monteurs, technici en engineers hebben. Hierbij kijken wij natuurlijk ook naar de beschikbare coureurs en Felipe staat al een geruime tijd op onze radar."

Met James Hinchcliffe heeft SPM een coureur die een langlopende verbintenis heeft. Marcus Ericsson heeft te kennen gegeven in 2020 ook voor het team te willen rijden. Kiel vertelde dat het testen van Nasr past bij een recent initiatief om 'talenten' van buiten de IndyCar-series aan de paddock te leren wennen.

"IndyCar geeft ons de kans om een coureur te testen op deze maandag. In het verleden hebben we dat met Robert Wickens gedaan, met Marcus deden we dat in 2018 en dit jaar zullen we dat met Felipe doen. Het geeft ons meer data om mee te werken dan voorheen en het geeft ons de kans om iemand te leren kennen die in de toekomst misschien geschikt is voor één van onze auto's."
