Conor Daly wordt teamgenoot Van Kalmthout bij Ed Carpenter Racing

Conor Daly heeft zijn plekje gevonden voor het IndyCar-seizoen 2020. De Amerikaan wordt - samen met teameigenaar Ed Carpenter - de teamgenoot van Rinus van Kalmthout bij Ed Carpenter Racing.

Daly en Carpenter zullen de bolide met startnummer 20 delen. Zoals gebruikelijk zal Carpenter zelf de races op de ovals voor zijn rekening nemen, waaronder dus ook de Indianapolis 500. Tijdens de overige twaalf races, die op de normale circuits en stratencircuits verreden worden, zal Daly in de auto stappen. Tijdens de Indy 500 zal Daly plaatsnemen in een derde bolide van ECR.

De deal van Daly wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door sponsor U.S. Air Force. De luchtmacht van de Verenigde Staten is inmiddels al drie jaar verbonden aan de uit Noblesville, Indiana afkomstige coureur. Het aantrekken van Daly zorgt ervoor dat auto 20 het hele seizoen door een coureur uit Indiana bestuurd zal worden, want Carpenter komt zelf uit Indianapolis.

"Ik ben zo dankbaar voor de trouw en het vertrouwen dat de U.S. Air Force in mij gedemonstreerd heeft dat ik de job aan kan. Het is een ongelooflijk om deze relatie te zien groeien en sterker te zien worden, terwijl we races blijven toevoegen aan het programma. Ik ben dolgelukkig dat ik weer een stap dichterbij een fulltime zitje in de IndyCar Series kom", vertelde Daly over zijn aanstelling.

Carpenter trots op aantrekken Daly en Air Force

"Ik ben extreem trots dat ik Conor Daly en de U.S. Air Force kan verwelkomen bij Ed Carpenter Racing", zei Carpenter. "Ik heb Conor zien groeien en volwassen zien worden gedurende zijn carrière en ik geloof erin dat zijn beste jaren nog moeten komen. Het is een enorme eer om de mannen en vrouwen te vertegenwoordigen die het land dienen in de U.S. Air Force en we hopen ze dit seizoen trots te maken."

Daly is de zoon van voormalig Formule 1-coureur en FIA-steward Derek Daly. De Amerikaan met Ierse roots heeft in 2016 en 2017 twee volledige seizoen in de IndyCar Series gereden, met een tweede plaats in Detroit in 2016 als beste resultaat. Ook in 2013, 2015, 2018 en 2019 reed Daly enkele races in de klasse als invaller. Tussen 2011 en 2014 was Daly in Europa actief als coureur in de GP3 en GP2.

Had ik wel een beetje verwacht. Ed is een echte Amerikaan en vermoedelijk wil hij de USAF livery ook kunnen gebruiken. Ik vind t wel raar dat de US Air Force sport kan en mag sponsoren. Alsof de Nederlandse marine het waterpolo team sponsort ofzo...

  Er zijn best wat atleten in Nederland die op een of andere manier een verbintenis hebben met Defensie, van judoka's tot turners. Zo vreemd is het eigenlijk niet.
  
  Maar ik zie de Nederlandse defensie niet zo snel een Richard Verschoor sponsoren, dat is weer een ander punt.
  
  Maar in Amerika staan Indycar en Defensie dichter bij elkaar, zie: Indy 500.
