Rinus van Kalmthout met afstand snelste tijdens IndyCar-test op Sebring

Rinus van Kalmthout heeft zijn eerste test afgewerkt als vaste coureur van Ed Carpenter Racing in de IndyCar Series. Daarbij maakte de Nederlander veel indruk, want hij reed de snelste tijd van de aanwezige coureurs.

Chevrolet belegde op het circuit van Sebring een testdag voor een select gezelschap coureurs, die allen weinig tot geen ervaring in de IndyCar Series hebben. Van deze coureurs was Van Kalmthout duidelijk de snelste. Hij raffelde het rondje af in 52,3 seconden en daarmee was hij meer dan een seconde sneller dan de overige deelnemers aan de test.

De tweede tijd werd genoteerd door Australian Supercar-kampioen Scott McLaughlin, die de test kreeg als beloning voor het behalen van de titel bij de Supercars in 2019. Hij gaf een seconde toe op VeeKay, maar de Australiër was wel sneller dan Indy Lights-kampioen Oliver Askew (Arrow McLaren SP) en Sage Karam, die de eerste meters van Dreyer & Reinbold Racing op een road course sinds 2013 aflegde.

Tevredenheid over test en aeroscreen

Van Kalmthout kijkt met een goed gevoel terug op de eerste testdag als vaste coureur van Ed Carpenter Racing, nadat hij afgelopen jaar al eens in Portland testte. "Na drie maanden wilde iedereen weer aan de auto werken. Ik heb veel geleerd en we hebben veel geleerd over de afstelling. De dag was een 10+. Het was voor het eerst dat ik brandstof spaarde, en ik moest veel nieuwe dingen doen. Ik heb nooit eerder zoveel geleerd in een dag rijden."

Bovendien kon Van Kalmthout voor het eerst testen met het aeroscreen. Het scherm doet in 2020 haar intrede als cockpitbescherming in de IndyCar en de Nederlander is tevreden met de werking ervan. "Het aeroscreen vind ik een behoorlijk goede verandering. Ik had niet het gevoel dat ik achter glas zat en alles voelde perfect."

Maar goed die Teenslipper is van Italiaans fabrikaat. En de aeroscreen geloof ik mede van via RB technology.

Maar zeg nou zelf het ziet er toch veel beter uit?

  Zeker, alles wijst daar op. Hoewel het veld daar een stuk dichter bij elkaar zit dus er meer concurrentie is, gaat hij denk ik hoge ogen gooien en wat titels pakken op termijn.

  Nou ik vind dat aeroscreen nog veeeeeeel lelijker dan de Halo. Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat ik de enige daarin ben :-)

  Ik heb ook liever geen van tweeën. Maar als er dan toch gekozen moet worden prefereer ik het aero screen boven de Halo. Domweg omdat ik het aero screen veel mooier in lijn vind lopen met het chassis dan de Halo.

elders ook al foto's gezien en ik moet zeggen, dat aeroscreen is ook wel even slikken zeg, dat het bovenkantje nog open is valt totaal niet op, het lijken wel geheel gesloten wagens geworden
