Ferrucci vervanger van Bourdais bij Dale Coyne Racing in 2020

Santino Ferrucci gaat in 2020 beginnen aan zijn tweede volledige IndyCar-seizoen. De Amerikaan blijft bij Dale Coyne Racing en schuift door naar het zitje dat de afgelopen jaren van Sebastien Bourdais was.

Het vertrek van Bourdais werd in een eerder stadium al aangekondigd. De Fransman nam vrijwel geen geld mee en Dale Coyne Racing kon dat avontuur niet langer financieren. Eerder deze winter werd Alex Palou al aangekondigd als de nieuwe coureur voor de auto van bolide 19, die vorig jaar nog door Ferrucci bestuurd werd. De Amerikaan schuift nu dus door naar de bolide met startnummer 18.

"Ik voel me vereerd dat Dale, Jimmy [Vasser] en [James] Sullivan het vertrouwen in mijn hebben om dit programma naar een hoger plan te tillen", vertelde Ferrucci. "De SealMaster-auto had in de afgelopen twee seizoenen veel succes. Ik kijk ernaar uit om in de auto met 18 te stappen en te beginnen met de spring training. Ik wil SealMaster ook bedanken voor hun vertrouwen in mij en ik ben heel blij dat ik ze mag vertegenwoordigen op het grootste podium."

Ferrucci in debuutseizoen sterk op ovals

In 2018 reed Ferrucci al vier races in de IndyCar Series, waarna hij in 2019 dus de kans kreeg om zich een heel seizoen te bewijzen. Vooral op de ovals maakte de coureur, die in Europa vooral bekend is doordat hij met opzet tegen teamgenoot Arjun Maini op reed na een Formule 2-race, veel indruk. Bij de Indy 500 werd hij op P7 de beste rookie, terwijl daarna op de ovals in Texas, Pocono en Gateway drie vierde plaatsen volgden.

"We zijn blij dat we Santino nog een jaar bij ons hebben in 2020. Hij had een erg goed debuutseizoen en op de ovals was hij absoluut indrukwekkend. We kijken ernaar uit dat hij daar dit jaar verder op bouwt", zegt teameigenaar Dale Coyne. "Ik denk dat hij velen heeft verrast in 2019 en hij heeft de potentie om het in zijn tweede jaar nog beter te doen."

Ferrucci was toch bij trident ontslagen omdat hij zijn teammaat beukte, hij niet aan zijn sponsorverplichtingen voldeed, en daarnaast door de FIA bestraft werd omdat hij met 1 racehandschoen in z'n wagen zat en in de andere hand met zijn mobieltje zat te spelen oid? meen me zoiets te he... Ik vind het echt vrij opmerkelijk dat deze enfant terrible toch nog aan de bak komt in een toch hoog aangeschreven raceklasse. Blijkbaar houden de Amerikanen wel van een bad boy.

  Ik vind het niet opmerkelijk, want deze jongen heeft genoeg talent en aardig wat potentieel.
  
  Dat de uitspraken van hem en zijn entourage niet handig waren; dat moge wel duidelijk zijn.

  wijsheid komt met de jaren, en niemand is zonder (jeugd)zonde. Prima coureur en ben heel benieuwd wat ie gaat brengen dit seizoen.

  Vettigeherder uitspraken gaat het niet om maar levensgevaarlijke capriolen uithalen en daarmee coureurs Marshalls en publiek in gevaar brengen... hij had levenslang geschorst moeten worden...
