Van Kalmthout combineert helmontwerpen vader en Luyendijk voor IndyCar-debuut

Rinus van Kalmthout heeft zijn helm voor zijn eerste seizoen in de IndyCar Series gepresenteerd. De Nederlander eert zowel Indy-legende Arie Luyendijk als vader Marijn van Kalmthout én Nederland met zijn nieuwe ontwerp.

Opvallen zal de helm van Van Kalmthout absoluut. De hoofdbescherming van de nieuwe coureur van Ed Carpenter Racing komt over uit de Indy Lights, waar hij achter Oliver Askew tweede werd in het kampioenschap. De nieuwe helm van VeeKay is voor het grootste deel oranje en kent een aantal opvallende elementen. Op de achterzijde staat een grote oranje leeuw als eerbetoon aan thuisland Nederland.

Op de zijkanten van de helm heeft Van Kalmthout een eerbetoon geplaatst aan twee voorbeelden in zijn eigen carrière. Op de rechterzijde staat een Nederlandse vlag, een verwijzing naar de helm waarmee vader Marijn van Kalmthout, die in het verleden zelf ook actief was als coureur. "Mijn vader had het vroeger ook zo op zijn helm, en op die manier is het voor mij ook begonnen", vertelt VeeKay op Twitter.

De andere kant van de helm is een eerbetoon aan de enige Nederlandse winnaar van de Indianapolis 500: Arie Luyendijk, die de race in 1990 en 1997 won. "Het is een nieuwe versie van Arie Luyendijk's helm uit de jaren '90", stelt Van Kalmthout. Op beide zijkanten staat het getal 21, het startnummer waarmee de Nederlander gaat debuteren in de IndyCar Series. Dat debuut volgt op 15 maart in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Vet!

Eén van de mooiere designs die ik ken, natuurlijk mede door mijn oranje bril. Het oranje i.c.m. de Nederlandse vlag vind ik heel erg geslaagd!
Ik hou wel van de normale en rustige lijnen, niet dat bliksemeffect over de hele helm, maar gewoon een iets rustiger ontwerp. Prachtig zo!!

Bruut, ben wel echt benieuwd! Als ik het zo bekijk is ed carpenter racing een mooi instap team in de indy.(ben een indy-rookie, zal ik niet ontkennen ;-) ) Zie dat ze Josef Newgarden, de kampioen van 2017 en 2019 in het team gehad hebben in 2016 toen is die 4e geworden(wat verreweg het beste resultaat is van het team). Hoop dat van Kalmthout wat moois laat zien.
