Rinus van Kalmthout in de knel door reisrestricties

Het IndyCar-debuut van Rinus van Kalmthout staat op losse schroeven. Het seizoen 2020 gaat over drie weken van start op de Texas Motor Speedway, maar het is nog maar zeer de vraag of en wanneer de Nederlander de oversteek naar Fort Worth kan maken. Van Kalmthout verblijft momenteel in eigen land en hij doet er samen met zijn team Ed Carpenter Racing alles aan om (ruim) voor 6 juli de reis naar Amerika te kunnen maken.

Teammanager Tim Broyles schetst tegenover RACER de situatie: "We hebben te maken met een uitdaging. Daarin spelen veel factoren een rol. Het zijn sowieso uitzonderlijke tijden en we werken ijverig om Rinus zo snel mogelijk deze kant op te krijgen. Het is de bedoeling dat we bij komend seizoen bij elk evenement twee auto's aan de start brengen en voor de Indy 500 schrijven we een derde wagen in. Die plannen zijn ongewijzigd."

"De IndyCar-organisatie is op de hoogte van onze situatie. Ze hebben ons geholpen met middelen om toenadering te zoeken tot alle betrokken instanties en de opties te verkennen, misschien kan iemand ons een gunst verlenen. Ik besef dat we hier niet de enige in zijn. Een hoop mensen is hiermee bezig. Het is lastig in te schatten welke kant het opgaat. Er zijn te veel verschillende scenario's en elke dag zijn er nieuwe ontwikkelingen. Maar we zijn naarstig op zoek naar een oplossing."

Mocht Van Kalmthout er niet in slagen om op tijd in Texas te arriveren, dan geldt Conor Daly als meest voor de hand liggende vervanger. Daly deelt de tweede auto van Ed Carpenter Racing met teameigenaar Ed Carpenter dit jaar, hij neemt alle normale banen en stratencircuits voor zijn rekening. Voor de races op ovals had hij zijn woord gegeven aan Carlin Racing, maar in geval van nood kan Ed Carpenter Racing een beroep op Daly doen.

  Met de Fyra is de NS ook het schip mee ingegaan, dus even doorvaren en je bent er.
  Zal gevalletje privejet worden als hij er al naar toe kan gaan.

Er liggen nog wat ongebruikte marinefregatten in Den Helder, hup wat hulpgoederen er in en Rinus natuurlijk dan kan hij nog op tijd in de VS zijn en maken we nog een goede beurt ook, er moeten nog ergens 3000000 afgekeurde Chinese Mondkapjes liggen.

  Gelukkig niet met zulke officieren is de kans groot dat hij een maand lang niet meer kan zitten. en dan al die sappige verhaaltjes die we hier dan weer krijgen zoiets van Rinus is op het verkeerde pookje gaan zitten of Rinus is top.
