Rinus van Kalmthout pakt zijn eerste pole!

De Nederlander Rinus van Kalmthout heeft zijn allereerste pole position gescoord in de IndyCar-series. De 20-jarige rookie deed dat op het binnencircuit van de Indianapolis Motorsport Speedway. Josef Newgarden mag naast hem starten en heeft de hoop op de titel nog niet opgegeven. De race is vanavond om 21.30 Nederlandse tijd.

"Het was zwaar", aldus 'VeeKay'. "Ik was vanochtend niet blij met de auto. Met mijn teammanager ging ik samen zitten en toen ontdekten we waardevolle informatie. We hebben veel werk verzet en ik kon een goede ronde neerzetten. Eindelijk, eindelijk, mijn eerste pole position."

Het kwalificatieformat is anders dan wat wij gewend zijn in Europa. De rijders zijn gesplitst in twee groepen. Beide groepen gaan om de beurt de kwalificatie rijden. De tijden van beide groepen worden niet op één hoop gegooid. De snelste coureur van de dag mag sowieso als eerste vertrekken. De nummer twee wordt bepaald door de snelste tijd van de andere groep. En dan gaat het om en om. Newgarden mag daarom voor Colton Hertha starten ondanks dat hij een langzamere tijd heeft gereden.

De leider in de stand Scott Dixon start pas vanaf de negende plaats. Met Newgarden op de eerste startrij kan het kampioenschap nog een mooie wending krijgen. Als Dixon Indianapolis verlaat met 55 punten meer dan zijn concurrent, dan mag de Australier voor de zesde maal een titel bijschrijven op zijn palmares. Op dit moment heeft de 40-jarige coureur 72 punten voorsprong op zijn belager. Er zijn nog maximaal 162 punten te verdienen.

  Mee eens! ;) Over de races zullen we ook gaan berichten met een kans op een Hollandse zege. Het is toch prachtig om een Nederlander te hebben aan 'de overkant' van de oceaan.

  Ach, in Amerika en de gehele racelarij is Rinus zijn visitekaartje inmiddels uitgegroeid tot posterformaat. Die gaat heel snel naar een topteam, Penske of Andretti?

Super dit! Eerst was ik sceptisch maar Rinus heeft absoluut veel talent! Ik zie regelmatig mooie en gewaagde acties van hem.

Ik denk dat de huidige team eigenaar erg in zijn nopjes is met Rinus.

Overigens wel een vraag, hoe groot is het verschil qua auto en team tussen een top team en een staart team, dit vergeleken met F1.
