Colton Herta pakt pole in St Pete, VeeKay teleurgesteld met P7

In de straten van St. Petersburg heeft Colton Herta de poleposition veroverd tijdens het tweede IndyCar-weekend. Met een tijd van 1.00.3120 bleef de Amerikaan twee tienden voor op de concurrentie. Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout miste op een haar na de Fast Six en start zondag als zevende.

VeeKay reed in Q1 in de tweede kwalificatiegroep. Op het 2,896 kilometer lange stratencircuit stond de Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur na zijn eerste run op plaats zeven, ruim voldoende om door te mogen naar de Fast Twelve. In zijn allerlaatste run verbeterde VeeKay zijn tijd en eindigde op positie vier vlak achter Josef Newgarden - die het hele weekend sterk oogt - Graham Rahal en Jack Harvey.

In Q2 was de strijd om de Fast Six spannend tot aan het eind. VeeKay eindigde net buiten de top zes door wat foutjes. De Nederlander was teleurgesteld en gaf aan tegenover NBC dat pole erin zou zitten met de nummer #21 wagen. VeeKay start op P7 met regerend kampioen Scott Dixon naast hem. Alex Palou - de polesitter en winnaar in het openingsweekend - kwam niet verder dan P10.

De zes coureurs van de Fast Six bestond uit een mix van ervaren en onervaren coureurs. Oud-kampioenen met Newgarden, Sebastien Bourdais en Simon Pagenaud tegenover de jongere generatie met Herta en Patricio O'Ward. Jack Harvey maakte de top zes compleet.

In het laatste kwalificatiedeel was uiteindelijk de 21-jarige Herta die iedereen achter zich liet. Daarmee scoorde de Andretti Autosport-coureur zijn vierde poleposition uit zijn IndyCar-carrière. Naast hem start de verrassend presterende Harvey.

De race is zondag om 18.30 Nederlandse tijd en te volgen op Ziggo Sport Racing.

  Ik ook. Herta en newgarden doen niet onder voor midfield F1 naar mijn mening. Indycar heeft mij de afgelopen jaren echt verbaasd met mooie actieraces.

Veekay werd echt in de laatste 2 seconden van de "quali" nog net eruit gereden. Morgen zullen er weer een hoop "coutions" zijn, dus alles is mogelijk.
