Newgarden pakt tweede zege van dit seizoen op oval van Gateway

Op de korte oval van Gateway heeft Penske-coureur Josef Newgarden voor de tweede keer dit IndyCar-seizoen een zege gepakt bij de Bommarito Automotive Group 500. De tweevoudig kampioen uit 2017 en 2019 bleef in de avondrace voor Pato O'Ward en teamgenoot Will Power, die van pole vertrok voor de 63ste keer. Romain Grosjean reed voor het eerst op een oval en werd veertiende.

Rinus VeeKay kende een goede start van de wedstrijd op de kombaan van WWT Gateway, maar gooide een toptienklassering door het putje na het veroorzaken van een incident tijdens de herstart in ronde 66. De Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur tikte in het gevecht om baanposities titelkandidaten Scott Dixon en Alex Palou uit de race. Ook VeeKay kon niet meer verder.

Voor Palou is dit andermaal een bittere pil. Vorige week viel de kampioensleider ook al uit door een kapotte motor. De Chip Ganassi-coureur ziet zijn voorsprong in het kampioenschap in twee weken transformeren naar een achterstand van tien punten op O'Ward, die 435 punten heeft. Newgarden komt door de overwinning de top drie binnen met 413 en duwt Dixon met 392 punten naar de vierde plaats.

Het seizoen telt nog drie races. Op 12 september gaat het kampioenschap verder met de Grand Prix van Portland.

Grove fout van Rinus. Hij moet wel oppassen met het maken van dit soort actie's, want voor hij het weet haalt Wolff hem naar Mercedes.

Was een lange rit vannacht, heb zitten kijken met in het begin bijna de eerste 50 ronden die opgingen aan cautions. Ed Carpenter die zichzelf elimineerd en later Rinus die er twee afknalt, lekker dagje voor ECR !
Maar mooi voor de titelstrijd !

  Veekay is de laatste races echt niet goed bezig, nu weer geen punten. Na zijn tweede plaats is het enkel kommer en kwel. En er nu in geslaagd twee kampioenschapskandidaten uit de race te kegelen. niet best.....hoop dat hij snel weer zijn oude niveau weet te vinden.
  
  Als je zelfs Scott Dixon pissig weet te krijgen dan moet je je even achter de oren krabben.

Gewoon een bar slecht optreden van Rinus. 3 races achter elkaar gewoon geen snelheid en geen geduld.

ECR is zelf ook slecht bezig met de setup. Niks werk en het laat duidelijk zien waarom ECR geen kampioenschap materiaal is. Gewoon te weinig middelen en kennis om een slecht weekend om te buigen zoals bij Ganassi/Penske/Andretti/Mclaren

Mooi voor het kampioenschap wel. Weer helemaal open. Mclaren on top! Hopelijk volgend jaar een 3de inschrijving erbij door dit succes.

  Elders is te lezen dat Andretti misschien in de toekomst ook wil gaan deelnemen in de F1.
  
  ‘t Is uiteraard nu nog slechts een gerucht maar je weet ‘t nooit en Alpine zei met mogelijke kandidate gesproken te hebben...
